Jewish Federations distribute $249,000 for Maui wildfire relief

Allocation will support relief efforts of four Jewish communal organizations in Hawaii, as Federations continue to raise funds and assess the growing needs.

Jewish Federations of North America are proud to announce that we have distributed $249,000 to date to address the humanitarian needs arising from the wildfires on the island of Maui. The funds will be allocated to four Jewish communal organizations in Hawaii that are playing a vital role in the relief efforts.  To date, 120 Jewish Federations and network communities have collectively contributed towards the Hawaii Wildfire Fund that was launched last week.

“The devastation in Maui is immeasurable, but we continue to be inspired by our partners on the ground that have responded with so much care, compassion and professionalism to the needs of the Jewish community and broader population,” said Jewish Federations of North America Emergency Committee Chair Wendy Abrams. “When there is a natural disaster or crisis anywhere in the world, the local Jewish community steps up in the most remarkable of ways, and it is the duty and also the privilege of our Jewish Federation system to support these efforts and provide the necessary resources to enable this life-sustaining work.”

The funds will be allocated to Maui Kosher Farm, Jewish Congregation of Maui, Maui Jewish Ohana, Chabad of Maui, and Jewish Community Services of Hawaii, and will support essential needs of victims of the wildfires including food, first-aid supplies and clothing, the hiring of a case manager to provide emotional support and help victims navigate the immediate aftershocks of this disaster, and temporary shelter.  Jewish Federations will continue to raise funds for the relief efforts and remain in close contact with our partners on the ground as we assess additional needs.

Jewish Federations have a long and proud history of response to global crises, aiding vulnerable Jewish populations and individuals of all faiths and backgrounds in the hardest-hit places. Funds have supported hundreds of relief efforts in the aftermath of major disasters, from earthquakes in the Middle East to tsunamis in Asia, to hurricanes and flooding in the Gulf to tornadoes in the Midwest.
